Uber wants to expand to Latin America with services that go beyond the transportation of people. One of the programs has been operating in the United States for 18 months already.
This is Uber Frigth, with operations in 48 US states, and has been made available to tens of thousands of truck drivers affiliated with the platform ready to transport the cargo from one point to another at the time when users require it.
With Uber there is some level of rejection among the carriers in the region, but the company stresses out that it is not going to be a change for the structure of the logistics industry, nor the substitution of the players within that industry, but more of a relationship and collaboration with the merchants, shipping companies and drivers.
There is still no date for this service to be available in Latin America, but it is expected to start in large markets, such as Brazil and Mexico. But it was learned that Panama is in the crosshairs, because the isthmus port system moves about 7 million TEUs and much of the reexports of the Colon Free Zone (ZLC) to Central America by land.
The car rental company with Uber drivers is planning to expand its business for short routes with motorcycles and electric bicycles, says CEO of the company, Dara Khosrowshahi, says the Financial Times.
